The AoIR conference draws an international group of 500-600 researchers and practitioners to present and discuss work at the cutting edge in understanding the social and cultural aspects of the internet and related technologies. #AoIR 2020: Life is the 21st annual conference of the Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR), a transdisciplinary gathering of scholars interested in the place of networked technologies in social processes.
The Association of Internet Researchers is happy to announce that the AoIR2021 conference will be in Philadelphia, USA, 13-16 October 2021. The AoIR conference draws an international group of 500-600 researchers and practitioners to present and discuss work at the cutting edge in understanding the social and cultural aspects of the internet and related technologies.
In line with our regular rotation schedule, the 2021 conference will take place in North America, and expressions of interest are therefore limited to prospective Conference Hosts in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. It is just a 6-minute walk from City Hall Station, which is a central hub for subway, trolley, and bus lines in the city. For only the second time in its history, the AoIR conference will cross the equator and be held in the southern hemisphere, returning to Brisbane and QUT where it was hosted in 2006. Dedicated AoIR staff including the Association Coordinator and Conference Coordinator will lead much of the conference planning, including negotiating contracts with hotels, meeting venues, catering, and the like, and handling the administrative details of the conference, such as registration, reception and meal planning, AV and wifi provision, and book vendor displays.
The Conference Host is an organisation or group of organisations that serve as a liaison to AoIR, assisting in the identification of conference spaces, hotels, catering and reception options, local sponsorships, and ways to feature the local intellectual community and culture. It will be hosted by Temple University (TU) and the University of Pennsylvania (Penn).
Today this seems less a moment of humour and more a prescient foreshadowing. It is also a 6-minute walk from Suburban Station if you are coming in via Amtrak or Regional Rail. University of Pennsylvania is a private Ivy League research university, founded before the Declaration of Independence in 1740 by Benjamin Franklin. The role of the Conference Host is to advise on this process, provide crucial local knowledge and connections, and where possible provide venue space at cost or for free.
