Essentially, the save data that is updated as you play the game is stored on Niantics' servers separately from your login, which is linked to a login method (Google, Facebook or PTC). Couldn't log in even tho I typed the right password, went over to their website but for some reason I couldn't even change the password. I would not recommend doing it even if it was possible. Then go back to Pokémon Go and link with Facebook. You have to tell it to log in with Facebook. It worked in my case let me know in the comments if it worked for you too. You can link it to a fake facebook account thiugh. It goes to an old account that I was not able to sign into at one time so I created a new Pokémon go account. Google is the way to go. You can add a new google account by switching to Facebook temporarily and switching to the new google account afterwards. Now is the time to enter your dummy account. Afterwards, I've linked my account to gmail and don't have such problems anymore. My kids are on PTC, very often, they cannot sign in.
