I can't wait to see how much they could've potentially been improved from that, especially in teams. Sakurai finally made them challenging and fun. Difficulty levels in Smash 64 and Melee Very Easy (blue difficulty) Smash 4 also featured an entirely retooled difficulty scale for its Classic and All-Star Modes, as with Smash Ultimate on its Classic Mode. Smash 4 CPUs also demonstrated a bit of human behavior, such as in Team Battles where if you grabbed someone and didn't throw, your CPU teammate would mostly attempt to use their strongest attack on them. All it takes is four hits — the last being Ganondorf's Final Smash — and the Cloud player (who is also controlled by the CPU) is toast. Difficulty levels Artificial intelligence levels range from 1 to 9, with 1 being the weakest and 9 being the strongest. They're still not as hard as truly great human players but they're clearly the best the series has ever had and even take risks like jumping off stage to finish you as a human would. The default CPU level in Versus matches is 1 for Melee and 3 in all other games, although rule settings in Ultimate allow players to select which level CPUs default to. However, the event matches in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. 4 only have three difficulties (Easy, Normal, and Hard).
The difficulty chosen - in addition to making the CPU opponents tougher and the prizes greater - determines what is faced at the end of the game, with higher intensities keeping what is fought in the lower, but adding a new foe to the mix. That's not fun challenging, that's just stupid challenging. CPU has always been a beast on LVL 9 in Ultimate. They input read though. Smash Bros Ultimate seems to have struck the perfect balance in LV9 CPUs. In Smash 64, the difficulty setting is only available for the 1P Game.
