July 13, 2020 by Jared Williams Yesterday’s shelf cloud across Northwest Florida made for some really dramatic images. A shelf cloud is a low-hanging, well-defined, wedge-shaped formation that occurs along the leading edge of a gust front in a thunderstorm.

Shelf clouds can look scary because they are usually low hanging, sometimes only 200 feet above the ground.

"Arguably the favorite cloud shared in this social media age, shelf clouds are created when a thunderstorm or line of thunderstorms' rain-cooled downdraft pushes slightly ahead of the parent storm, lifting air at the downdraft's leading edge, or gust front," said weather.com meteorologist Jonathan Erdman.
