The whole premise of Goodnight, Sweetheart is brilliant, the time-travel and the contrasts between life in WWII and the relative security of the 1990s. Though Nicholas Lyndhurst may well be cemented into viewers' minds as drippy Rodney Trotter from 'Only Fools & Horses', it must also be pointed out that he has taken on leading roles in other successful television sitcoms such as 'The Two Of Us' ( in which he starred with Janet Dibley ), 'The Piglet Files' ( which also featured Serena Evans and Clive Francis ) and, perhaps his most successful solo vehicle, 'Goodnight Sweetheart', written by the prolific Laurence Marks & Maurice Gran, the same duo behind 'Birds Of A Feather' and 'The New Statesman'. It starred Nicholas Lyndhurst as Gary Sparrow, an accidental time traveller who leads a double life after discovering a time portal allowing him to travel between the London of the 1990s and the same area during the Second World War. | This is so underrated as one of the best British comedies and I don't think it's no coincidence that Nick Lyndhurst stars in this. Ohhh but why were these fabulous actors on for only 6 series? I watched this as a young teenager in the early 90's and really enjoyed it. | I was a toddler and only have hazy recollections. Love this Show, I would not miss it, takes me back to the 40's and makes one realize just how lucky we are now, although we complain about things, We had it tough in those days. Nerdy, autistic and a real bloke, he is the really funny bit. Great plot, well developed characters, good performances from all cast, especially Nick Lyndhurst. He loves and needs both women, and his struggle is agonising. Intimate relationships are central to the overall human condition. The American Episode was near the mark, they thought they had won the war for us. So come on BBC, how about some more Goodnight Sweetheart that would bring "Millions" of viewers flocking back to you.....Any Chance?. When Gary plays a Beatles song at a birthday party at the Royal Oak, he draws the attention of a music promoter, who is keen to give the song to entertainer George Formby. As the time-travel takes place during the six years of World War 2,(in parallel with the 90s) it was always inevitable that the show would end after the war had fully played out. At the start the sitcom was a compelling comment on male insecurity, but it soon descended into cartoonish plotlines Gary is played very sympathetic by Nicholas Lyndhurst. It was on in a decade where we enjoyed 'One Foot in the Grave' 'Men Behaving Badly' and 'Father Ted' Though quite rightly, the seventies is regarded as the golden era of British sitcom, the nineties were also right up there in my opinion. Loved all the characters - but especially PC Deadman, brilliant! It contained comedy, serious moments, and noted both it's nostalgic and modern content. All of the 5 central characters, especially the 3 main ones are searching for a place to belong - where they can be loved and where they can reciprocate. Lucky for us viewers, Emma Amos who took over Yvonne at the same time, was a breath of fresh air and made the Yvonne part even better. A lot of the subtle humour, optimistic post grey era politics, and how it captures the spirit of war time Britain were lost on me as a teenager. When the Yanks come to the Royal Oak Gary is able to get Ron the parts he needs to build his own jeep and Reg discovers he has a black cousin, in the area to trace his ancestors. Awards Actually the only flaw I can think of about this show is that it ended. There was a couple of changes with actors over time but the new ones stepping in done an excellent job and it made no difference. When Stella throws Ron out, the Sparrows take him in, but Ron has trouble keeping Gary’s secret from Yvonne. Short, Drama. Liked the idea of including Noel Coward and George Formby as characters, a few more would have been fun.
I don't think there's anything about this show I don't like, the comedy is top notch, the actors are perfect for their roles and the mix of Sci-Fi is just right, not too heavy handed.
Some of the episodes are a bit predictable, but even this is forgivable and the series as a whole is well worth a watch. Be safe, and Enjoy! It had so many open ends, and could continue in any direction, even down to Ron or Phoebe being able to step through time.. What happened to the night club? Elizabeth Carling (who became better known as Celia in Casualty) followed Dervla Kirwan's gentle homely portrayal of Phoebe, but when Emma Amos took over Yvonne from Michelle Holmes, the character became softer and more sympathetic, while paradoxically becoming more successful in the era of New Labour (you could argue that the series says as much about the 1990s as it does about the war years).
