Personally I might opt for honeymoon Chania as believe more things to do there, as you put it. Members who are extremely knowledgeable about this destination and answer travellers’ questions frequently. There are excellent beaches within easy reach of Chania: my choice would be Chryssi Akti, which is the nearest, about 1.5 km to the west. However, if you are really keen on the history, including Spinalonga, you may wish to consider a town to the East such as Agios Nikalaos/Elounda.

If you have any other tips about what to do while we are there, I would love to hear them. Both have beaches, Rethymnon's a lot bigger. It depends on what you want to do and see. Rethymno's beaches start in the town and stretch for miles to the east. Maybe in the mountains?
