Some of the earliest sgraffito ceramic ware was produced in the Po Valley in Northern Italy and later Pisa, where it began to be traded across Europe. The word "sgraffito" comes from the Italian word sgraffiare, "to scratch", which is in turn derived from the Greek gráphein, "to write".
