The volume is exceptional and it has that “open” or “broken in” quality you can get from a high quality solid western red cedar top. The C & E strings were binding in the nut, making accurate tuning difficult, and the nut was high making notes sharp even at the low end of the neck. But basically there is a low and high G played together so you get the best of both world’s in one uke. This is a gloss tenor slothead with cutaway body and a pickup system including onboard tuner & eq. The wood is lighter and not nearly as cardboard-brown as it looks in photos.
The ukulele is light but feels solidly constructed.

I’d stick with the Aquila strings. I love, love, love Kala instruments. The strings are comfortable and really nice to strum, according to her and her tiny fingers. The top is definitely laminate. It is light weight with excellent balance. I believe the ukulele sent to you is referred to as the “Narrow neck” model where the nut measures in at 1 3/8” while their standards are 1 1/2”. I’m looking forward to getting my Kala KA TEM next week. The wood of the body had actually dipped slightly.

Aside from its lower price and lack of white binding on the KAA-T, as well, I haven’t discovered any significant differences, either. The Kala KA-T is at our local Long& McQuade music shop here in Vancouver, BC. Kalas are well built and wonderful instruments. My style of playing has lots of single notes, so any frequencies that are muddy quickly reveal themselves. It is feather lite as well. Beautiful. MY ziricote soprano is bright and punchy. Never got any good at it though. I bought this as a move up from a Clearwater Concert Uke to give me a little more finger space and also a deeper fuller tone. We asked them to combine that with the striking beauty of their Ziricote line. It inspired me to move up. The tone is rich and full, it played loud and clear to a crowd of 200 people.

Kala ukes are a great value, and a quality instrument. In fact they are based on the west coast, ‘nestled in the Sonoma wine country’. The sound is crisp and clean, the action is perfect, and it stays in tune all the way up the neck. I just came back from NAMM 2019, where I spent a lot of time at the KALA booth.
Here is a review of my newest ukulele, the Kala KA-T. I have owed the Koa2 tenor for about a month and I absolutely love how it looks and sounds. My 8YO Daughter and I (42) are learning together. I recently purchased a Kala Zircote Concert (KA-ZCT-C) from The Ukulele Site. Of course we couldn’t feature all of the Kala models we carry here, but this was to highlight some of them. Can you comment on the difference? I’m new to the ukulele, but have played guitar on and off for over 50 years. I don't feel like the item was packed properly. The spruce/ovangkol tenor is a bright and jangly tenor, with just the right amount of bass to balance things out. I currently own an ALOHA 24″ concert uke which is helping me to learn – from being a total beginner.

Warm tones of western red cedar and acacia are framed of with the seductive Padauk binding and shown off with a thin, glassy finish. So at NAMM I was looking to get something in a larger form factor with the same GCEA tuning of the uke that I learned on. I love my spruce too, rosewood back and sides Kala.
