Now I’ve read “Say her Name” I am admittedly a little bit of a James Dawson fangirl. A little while ago I read “Cruel Summer” from this author and adored it, the best fun I’ve had with a book in ages, being a horror movie geek of the highest order and never before being able to get that same feeling from a novel. For instance, no mention is made of efforts across the country to end the use of money bail, a practice that disproportionately affects low-income people of color who can’t cover the fees. Viewers may understand why her loved ones don’t believe Bland was suicidal, and likely will also understand why her arrest and its aftermath could have left Bland feeling hopeless enough to end her life. I really enjoyed the count down elements and thought the whole thing was paced well, I liked the characters and how the story builds - it was all around really well executed, and I found myself itching to know the gory details. This book has been one the best books I've ever read last year and I've been hoping to read one that'll give me chills like this one did. Everyone knows I love a good boarding school! It was more of a slow burn though.

A Halloween dare at her ridiculously spooky boarding school is no big deal, especially when her best friend Naya and cute local boy Caine agree to join in too. (see: Monster by C. J. Skuse) Everyone in UK primary schools knows about Bloody Mary, so I thought this whole concept was a fantastic idea, but there were so many layers that I wasn't expecting that somehow turned this into a four star read!

Yes yes ok I’m middle aged and supposed to be all grown up and stuff but really, who needs that kind of stress in their lives? Bland’s mother affirms unequivocally that she does not believe her daughter died of suicide. James Dawson is brilliant!

It is clear that her life should not have ended.

The film doesn’t get close to showing how discriminatory systems contributed to Bland’s death, but it tries to articulate the broader impact by showing her family’s fight for reform. I'm still too terrified to look in a mirror. But not all documentaries are created equal.

I just wish I'd read it at Halloween! [My favourite part was probably the phantom pregnancy just because it was so unexpected and eerie. It’s unfortunate that this documentary could not do the same.

What the film does best is bear witness to what happened on the day of the arrest and place it in the context of Bland's political life. By its end, the documentary seems to harken back: What didn’t happen to Sandra Bland? The book tracked data on traffic stops in North Carolina from 2002 to 2016 and found that compared with their share in the population, black drivers are almost twice as likely to be pulled over as their white counterparts—even though the latter drive more on average. I've been spoiled rotten by reading Mary: Summoning by Hillary Monahan because that duology was an exceptional take on the Bloody Mary story.
